Nobody ever found Blue when he hid in the garden. Among the towering trees and thickets of brambles and flowers, it was easy to feel like he’d fallen into another universe altogether. Time and fear did not exist, and neither did responsibility or shame.
“Hold on, wains, back it up,” he rumbled softly, running a hand through his long, greying hair and scratching at his beard. Something in the sheer size of him – maybe seven or eight feet tall – made Reese’s entire body stand on edge, soothed only by pressing closer to Glais.
The shape that shot out of a nearby stand of bushes and reeds was that of a young woman. Shaped like Glais, she bore piercing blue eyes and her black fur was marked here and there by white specks like stars against the night sky. Her hair, long and tied back into a single braid, whipped behind her as she moved.
Aisling thought her brother was an idiot. An idiot she cared for very much, but an idiot nonetheless.
